About the Workshop

Unlock the secrets of indigo dyeing in our immersive workshop, "The Art of Indigo Dyeing." Join us for a hands-on experience where you'll delve into the fascinating world of this ancient dyeing technique that has deep roots in South Carolina's history.

Indigo, once a thriving crop in South Carolina, played a pivotal role in shaping the region's economic landscape during the 18th and 19th centuries. The indigo plant, scientifically known as Indigofera tinctoria, was cultivated for its vibrant blue dye, which became highly sought after worldwide. South Carolina's indigo plantations contributed significantly to the global indigo trade, leaving an indelible mark on the state's history.

In this workshop, participants will learn the step-by-step process of indigo dyeing, from preparing the dye vat to creating stunning patterns on fabric. Our experienced instructor, Linda Abatte, will guide you through the traditional techniques and share insights into the historical significance of indigo in South Carolina. You'll be able to experiment with various folding and binding techniques and create your unique indigo-dyed masterpiece to take home.

Whether you're a seasoned textile artist or a beginner exploring the world of natural dyes, this workshop offers a unique blend of history and hands-on creativity. Join us as we revive the age-old art of indigo dyeing and connect with the rich cultural heritage of South Carolina.
