ARTIST’S STATEMENT:

M. P. Swenson – Contemporary Landscape Painter

My work is inspired by the natural world.  The painting starts by putting paint on paper or board in a random fashion.  The result is an accidental relationship of color,  pattern or shape.

It is improvisational painting, without referring to photos, sketches or drawings.  It is almost a dialogue with the paint – I call it intuitive painting.  As paint or texture is added, a picture will begin to emerge that suggests a memory to me.  Once the subject has been identified, I develop that image in a way that I believe makes it interesting.

Symbolism is very important in my work.  Water, the sun and the moon all play an integral part in my art.

I want tactile effects to create a visual sensation that in turn creates an immediacy with the viewer.  In using various sculptural textures like crushed glass, found objects, papers and natural objects, I hope to make my paintings a direct contact with nature itself.

M.P. Swenson is the publisher of the Coastal Observer in Pawleys Island, S.C.  She is married to Charles Swenson and has one son, Trevor.  Her work is in private and corporate collections here and in Europe.  She has won numerous awards including acceptance twice in the SC Watercolor Society’s annual juried show, first place awards in the Waccamaw Arts & Crafts show, multiple first place awards in the Old Santee Canal Show and the Florence Museum Banker’s Show, 2nd place.  She has been painting since 1989.
