On Friday, April 4, 2008, The Rice Museum will host two book signings.

From 11:00 am until 3:00 pm, Frances Cheston Train will sign copies of her new book, "In Those Days, A Carolina Plantation Remembered."  In this book, author Frances Train recalls fond memories of life on Friendfield Plantation, a rice plantation in Georgetown County.  The book includes many photographs from the early 1900s and detailed descriptions of everyday life on Friendfield Plantation in the byegone days of the Lowcountry.

From 3:00 until 4:30 pm, Angela D. Mack will sign "Landscape of Slavery, The Plantation in American Art."    This book is an original study of plantation images from the eighteenth century through the present.  Through eighty-three color plates, nineteen black-and-white illustrations, and six thematic essays, the collection examines depictions of plantation structures, plantation views, and related slave imagery and art in the context of the American landscapte tradition, addressing the impact of these works on race relations in the United States.  Published by The University of South Carolina Press, softcover $24.95, clothbound $49.95.  May be pre-ordered from The Rice Museum by calling 843-546-7423 or e-mailing thericemuseum@sc.rr.com.


The 21st Annual Winyah Arts AssociationMulti-Media Exhibition opened with a reception and awards presentations on Thursday, March 27, 2008.
The exhibition consists of work by more than 40 area artists and includes oils, acrylics, watercolors, collage, and mixed media paintings, as well as photographs.
The show was judged by James Archambeault of Lexington, Kentucky.  Best-in-Show went to Betty Robinson of Georgetown for "Ridge," watercolor and colored pencil.  First place was awarded to "Friendly Winter Walk," acrylic, by Terrence O'Donnell of Pawleys Island and second to "Copse of Orange," mixed media/collage by Pollie Bristow of Florence.  Honorable Mentions went to "Summer Sky," oil, Audrey McLeod, Georgetown; "Waiting Game," oil, Charlie Stott; Winston-Salem, NC; and "The Card Players, Chinatown, NYC," watercolor, Gail Joley, Pawleys Island.
Rice Museum Director James Fitch selected "Paperwhites in Chinese Bowl," oil, by Susan Tiller of Georgetown as the Director's Award winner.
The exhibition will hang in The Prevost Gallery through Saturday, May 10, 2008.
